Oil glands are a common element of every skin type. With oily skin, the oil glands do not seem to know that too much of a good thing causes problems. The good news about excess oil is that the skin is less likely to dry, become flakey and develop premature wrinkles. The bad news is that oily skin is shiny, appears sweaty and is more prone to acne than with dry or combination skin. As an inherited characteristic, oily skin is not going away so it requires learning how to care for it.

Excess oil on the skin acts as glue to which dirt particles and bacteria stick. During adolescence the oil glands produce even more oil which kicks the acne formation into hyper-drive. It’s no wonder that teenagers who are so upset with the acne that they will try outrageous ways to dry their skin. Better to use a gentle astringent on the face. The old notion of drying out the face by rubbing with alcohol is a temporary fix that dries the outer skin layer and creates skin damage. Getting a sun tan is another mythical way to reduce oil. Sun exposure leaves behind long term damage and heightens the potential for developing skin cancer. Using a high SPF sun screen or moisturizer with SPF is the best approach for limited sun exposure.

Oily skin care cleaner and moisturizer products are important for keeping the skin hydrated properly without stimulating excess oil production. A good skin cleanser is the basis for oily skin care by keeping the pores clear. Oily skin tends to have larger pores and those pores can become clogged by dirt, dead skin cells and bacteria. When oily skin is not cleansed well at least twice daily, these foreign elements settle into the pores which becomes the ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Before you know it, a pimple rises. Popping the pimple is not the cure; in fact, it tends to spread the bacteria to nearby pores so the pimple process begins again.

Along with selecting an oily skin care cleaner and moisturizer, you may also want to purchase toner and an exfoliant. If possible, select products from the same oily skin care line so that they work effectively together. Make certain that the products you use do not cause irritation or redness. These are signs of drying and inflammation which are not good results for oily skin.

Combination skin care products may be slightly cheaper than those made specifically for oily skin, but using the wrong product is not a bargain. Oily skin care cleaner and moisturizer must be used daily. There is no diet to reduce pore size. If you have larger pores, you simply must care for them properly. When possible, give your skin a rest by not wearing makeup, particularly powder for a day. Oily skin can also become sensitive skin, so avoid creating new problems with faithful daily use of oily skin care cleaner and moisturizer.
