For far too long, men ignored their skin care. They shaved, splashed on after-shave scents and endured the burn as just what men do. What they were actually doing was damaging their facial skin. Finally men were given equal rights to care for their skin. Mens skin care products are common rather than unusual and its about time.
Men’s faces have the same problems as women have due to free radical damage from sun exposure, airborne dirt particles and environmental dryness. Male skin is actually 20% thicker than skin on women’s faces. The thickness is due to higher level of collagen and elastin. That’s the good news. The bad news is that male skin also has more sebaceous glands which generates more oil on the skin. Daily shaving also tends to dehydrated the skin. Men who shave daily desperately need a good quality moisturizer instead of hitting the skin with after shave scents while still tender from the shaving.
Men, who work outdoors or spend many hours driving, get sun exposure that leaves sun damage and causes premature wrinkling on the face. These men are more likely to use high SPF sunscreen than to use moisturizer which is also necessary.
The time honored tradition of male skin care was to wash the face with any soap handy. Usually that soap is made for washing the body and not the best choice for face washing. There’s another drying problem for male skin. Dry skin needs to be hydrated with regular application of moisturizer. Back in the day when mens skin care was a few products on a specialty shelf, men accepted that their skin would be damaged with age.
No longer do men have to sneak moisturizer from their wives, girlfriends or mothers. There are a wide variety of choices for men’s skin care suited for dry, oily or combination skin. Men’s skin care products can be purchased in drug stores and discount stores as well as department stores.
For men who have not used skin care before, they can get a good start by going to a day spa for a facial and skin analysis. An aesthetician can identify areas of damage to the skin and recommend regular treatments. The aesthetician also demonstrates and teaches how to properly wash the face, apply moisturizer and use specialty skin care products. With this instruction, a man feels more in charge of his skin care and able to choose the brand and price point that he prefers.
Men are shopping for skin care. Men’s skin care products are a four billion dollar industry. While younger men are quicker to embrace men’s skin care products, more and more older men are adding at least moisturizer and cleanser to their daily routine. Men who used SPF can now choose a moisturizer with SPF and get double benefit for their skin.
Skin care for men is gaining popularity as men see how something so simple can make such a difference in their skin texture, elasticity and appearance. They might not notice right away, but the women in their lives will notice, and appreciate.
